What is the Collatz Conjecture?

The Collatz Conjecture is one of the most famous unsolved problems in mathematics. Despite being easy enough for schoolchildren to understand, it has puzzled professional mathematicians for decades. Sometimes called the 3n + 1 problem, the Collatz Conjecture involves a surprisingly simple set of rules that create extraordinarily complex patterns.

The problem was first proposed in 1937 by the German mathematician Lothar Collatz. Since then, countless mathematicians, computer scientists and enthusiastic amateurs have explored its mysteries, yet nobody has been able to prove conclusively that the conjecture is true for every possible number.

What makes the Collatz Conjecture so fascinating is the contrast between its simplicity and its apparent unpredictability. It is a perfect example of how mathematics can produce astonishing complexity from a few straightforward rules.

How Does the Collatz Conjecture Work?

The rules are remarkably simple.

  1. Start with any positive whole number.
  2. If the number is even, divide it by 2.
  3. If the number is odd, multiply it by 3 and add 1.
  4. Repeat the process with the new number.

Eventually, every number that has been tested so far reaches the sequence:

4 → 2 → 1

Once a sequence reaches 1, it enters an endless loop because:

1 is odd, so:

1 × 3 + 1 = 4

4 is even, so:

4 ÷ 2 = 2

2 is even, so:

2 ÷ 2 = 1

And the cycle repeats forever.

For example, let’s begin with the number 6.

6 is even, so divide by 2:

6 → 3

3 is odd, so multiply by 3 and add 1:

3 → 10

10 is even:

10 → 5

5 is odd:

5 → 16

The complete sequence becomes:

6 → 3 → 10 → 5 → 16 → 8 → 4 → 2 → 1

No matter which positive whole number mathematicians have tested, the sequence always seems eventually to arrive at 1.

Why Is It Called a Conjecture?

In mathematics, a conjecture is a statement that appears to be true but has not yet been formally proven.

Computers have checked the Collatz Conjecture for enormous ranges of numbers—far beyond anything a human could calculate manually. Every tested number eventually falls to 1. However, checking billions or even trillions of examples is not enough to establish a mathematical proof.

A proof would need to demonstrate that every possible positive integer, including numbers far larger than we could ever compute, will eventually reach 1.

So far, nobody has managed to provide such a proof.

Why Is the Collatz Conjecture So Difficult?

At first glance, the problem seems trivial. After all, the rules are easy to explain in a single sentence.

The difficulty arises because the sequences behave unpredictably.

Some numbers descend rapidly toward 1, while others increase dramatically before eventually falling. Certain starting numbers produce surprisingly long chains. For example, the number 27 generates a sequence containing more than one hundred steps before finally reaching 1.

This seemingly random behaviour makes it extremely difficult to analyse mathematically. The sequence repeatedly alternates between multiplication and division, causing numbers to rise and fall in ways that are hard to predict.

Mathematicians often describe the Collatz process as exhibiting elements of chaos, where simple rules generate highly complex outcomes.

Why Are Mathematicians Interested in It?

The Veritasium Youtube video explains it all.

The Collatz Conjecture is important not only because it remains unsolved, but also because it touches on broader themes within mathematics.

Researchers study problems like Collatz to better understand:

  • Number theory.
  • Dynamical systems.
  • Patterns and randomness.
  • Computational mathematics.
  • Chaos theory.

The conjecture demonstrates that even elementary arithmetic can conceal profound mysteries. It serves as a reminder that mathematics still contains many unanswered questions.

Over the years, leading mathematicians have attempted to solve the problem. Although significant progress has been made in understanding the behaviour of many sequences, a complete proof remains elusive.

Can You Solve the Collatz Conjecture?

Anyone can explore the Collatz Conjecture. No advanced mathematical training is required to generate sequences and search for patterns. This accessibility has made the problem especially popular among students, puzzle enthusiasts and recreational mathematicians.

Many people enjoy investigating questions such as:

  • Which starting numbers create the longest sequences?
  • Which numbers reach the highest values before descending?
  • Are there hidden patterns within the sequences?
  • Could there exist a number that never reaches 1?

These unanswered questions continue to inspire both professional researchers and amateur mathematicians alike.
