Can shops refuse cash in the UK? What happens if you refuse to pay electronically.

Can shops refuse cash in the UK? Cash is perfectly legal - but it is often used illegally.

In 2026 – can shops refuse cash in the UK if they want electronic payments only?

Yes, a business can refuse to accept a cash for payment of goods or services, if it is reasonable for them to do so.

When is it reasonable for them to do so?

When there is no legal requirement to pay with cash at all! This may sound odd, but it depends on what you’ve agreed with said business. You could agree to pay with anything – dollars, bitcoins, NFTs, Etherium, bananas, cheese, even. There is no requirement to pay with cash.

Please explain more clearly.

English law requires only ‘valuable consideration’ – you can agree to do or sell something in exchange for other goods or other services. There are rules e.g. Consideration cannot already have been performed. No ‘past consideration’, a pitfall people find when they start doing favours for each other and someone gets short-changed.

But note this:- If the pub or a restaurant or anyone puts up signs saying ‘Electronic payments only. We do not accept cash.’ or similar, then you cannot compel them to accept cash instead of an electronic payment. Because the sign is part of the contract – you’re agreeing to pay electronically and that agreement is enforceable by the business.

What happens if you leave the cash on the counter and walk out?

The business could accept the cash or it could refuse it. This action raises the stakes and it is not recommended. You should not do this.

E.g. You order dinner for £15 and the signs stipulate electronic payments only. They perform the contract, i.e. they give you dinner – you are obligated to pay with in the method stated on the sign. The sign is part of contract – if the they’ve discharged the condition, given you dinner, then they can enforce the payment method. In fact they can only enforce the payment method, they can’t make yoi pay with cash either.

Giving them cash and leaving without making the electronic payment or giving your contact details or other security is dishonest. This is a bad thing. Really bad. Arguably dishonest.

You can be prosecuted leaving cash in lieu of an electronic payment under the Theft Act(s) and your conviction would affirm the allegation of dishonesty. This means you could lose your job and it could prevent you from getting car or home insurance. You could even be fined or imprisoned. It’s a very bad idea. Also, it’s not fair on the business – which has been very clear about what sort of payment and consideration they’re prepared to accept.
